Jane Emkes was a 1979 graduate of Seymour High School and a three-year varsity starter for the Lady Owls’ basketball team.

As a senior, she averaged 23.8 points per game setting a school record that still stands more than 40 years later. Jane also led the team in assists, averaging 5.5 per game, and topped the team in steals. She earned All-South Central Conference honors and was named to the All-Sectional team. She was voted the Lady Owls’ Most Valuable Player.

As a junior, Jane averaged 15 points a game and led the team in assists and steals. She was named to the All South Central Conference team, was selected to the All-Sectional team and was the team MVP.

Jane’s name is still found throughout the Seymour girls’ basketball record book. She has the school record for most field goals in a game with 19, most assists in a game with 19 and most steals in a game with 11. She is 13th in career scoring with 844 points, 11th in career assists with 200 and sixth in career steals with 234.

Jane was selected to the Indiana Basketball Hall of Fame Silver Anniversary team in 2004 and was inducted into the Indiana Basketball Hall of Fame in 2011.

Jane continued her basketball career at Ball State University, where she was a three-year starter for the Cardinals. She led the team in assists her sophomore, junior and senior seasons. She still has the BSU record for assists in a game with 14, she is 6th in single season assists with 168 and 9th in career assists with 346. She is also in sixth in steals in a game with 8 and 13th in career steals with 155. In 1981, Jane ranked sixth in the nation in assists, was voted to the Mid-America Conference All-Tournament team and the IAIAW Division 1 All-tournament team. She was named to the Ball State 1980s All-Decade team.

Since her college basketball days, Jane has continued to play softball and returned to playing competitive basketball in 2011 (seniors 3 on 3). In both sports, her teams have competed and often won medals annually at the Huntsman World Senior Games and biennially at the National Senior Games. In 2017, she joined a Canadian team earning silver medals playing full-court basketball at the World Masters Games in New Zealand.
